Horry County Debates Myrtle Beach New Motorcycle Rally Rules and Ordinances

by Boss Hawg on January 20, 2009

Geez folks, when does this Myrtle Beach bunk come to end? Take the hint and move North or South…to hell with Myrtle Beach proper.

Today, January 20, 2009, the Horry County Council has the area’s motorcycle rallies back on the agenda. They are discussing raising the price of motorcycle related vendor permits and cutting in half the duration a vendor can sell and where vendors can sell their goods.

Yeah some white knuckle drivers are ticked…but can they live with what the Horry County Council proposes to do with the noise, congestion and “rowdy behavior” they say accompany me and my fellow motorcycle, and Harley-Davidson riders during the May Bike Week and October Fall Pilgrimage motorcycle rallies?  Do they really want lost vendor permits and lost tax revenue?  One would not think so since they just passed an additional $.01 cents tax to improve roads, drainage, etc… Brain fart, sure seems so to me!

Well I can tell you, I believe the locals are more geared at the new rules and regulations to single out Atlantic Beach Bikefest (Black Bike Week) in May. I know I may come under fire here, but I am not going to sugar coat it for you!  Just maybe the ACLU and the NAACP will step up to the plate, again, and sue the city of Myrtle Beach for discriminating against motorcycle riders alike whether coming to the Myrtle Beach Bike Week or the latter Atlantic Beach Bikefest which is better known as Black Bike Week.

Horry County’s effort to regulate the rallies comes after the city of Myrtle Beach passed laws last year to stem the effects of the rallies. Tom Rice, an attorney who lives in Myrtle Beach, said the county proposal does not go far enough and address heightened crime and traffic deaths during the rallies.

“If we were Walt Disney World, and we had a ride that every year people got killed on, how long would that ride be open?” Rice said. “We would definitely have to do something to change it.”

I say to Tom Rice that if the Harley Davidson motorcycle riders really bother you, go stuff some ear plugs in your ears!  Anyways, you can read here what the Sun News says on-line, today.

But County Council Chairwoman Liz Gilland said she was unsure how she would cast her vote. She said she did not think restricting vendors would solve the problems with rowdy behavior during the rallies.

“If you don’t have vendors, what are folks going to do?” she said. “I don’t want to invite folks here to have a rally with our name on it when we don’t provide anything to do other than you come, you gather at the bars, and you drink all day.”

Read these past articles and what Myrtle Beach is doing to keep the Harley-Davidson and custom motorcycles riders from coming there. Here is the message from the Mayor of Myrtle Beach and an article in the Myrtle Beach Sun News for us not to come cause we are not welcome anymore!

I know this is in South Carolina and they can sell a T-Shirt like this at a local bar, but Myrtle Beach and Horry County really need to get with the times because America is proudly swearing in its first Black President, Barack Obama, today.

You better wake up my friends or these kind of issues will happen again and again at a rally near you. It was great fun while it lasted!  Now, the hell with Myrtle Beach!  Me and my fellow motorcycle brothers will move on as we already have to other fine motorcycling destinations that actually want us motorcycle riders. If something positive comes out of all the not wanting motorcycles in the Myrtle Beach area I will write another post. Until then, Mrytle Beach…No Way Baby!
