Gregg Allman and The Allman Brothers Band

by Boss Hawg on January 4, 2009

Did you ever listen to Midnight Rider, Whipping Post, Ramblin Man, Melissa, Statesboro Blues, Blue Sky, Jessica, etc…? They have all been favorites of mine and I am proud that the Allman Brothers Band, from Macon, Georgia, were pioneers in the music industry with their good ole Southern Rock.

Looking back, Duane Allman, Gregg’s older brother, was instrumental in co-founding the Allman Brothers Band in 1969 along with Gregg.   Sadly though, Duane was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1971 and just a little over a year later Berry Oakley, their bass player at the time, was killed in another motorcycle accident.

These two great losses, just a little over 12 months apart, were very difficult for Gregg to overcome and the Allman Brothers Band has had to regroup several times since these two tragic deaths.  The Allman Brothers band were so hot back then, that in 1971 George Kimball of Rolling Stone magazine said the Allman Brothers Band were one of “most influential rock groups of the 1970s” and “the best damn rock and roll band this country has produced in the past five years.”

You may be happy to know that the Allman Brothers Band will be celebrating their 40th anniversary this year and are planning to perform their longest tour in years.  Gregg promises this year that he will be at their annual Beacon Theater concerts, which kicks off the anniversary tour. He envisions another 60 concerts to perform live throughout the United States and will be co-joined by some of their favorite musicians. Gregg says “I can’t let it out of the hat yet. You wouldn’t want to miss it”.

With his life’s history opened up like a book, you should read Greg Allman’s fresh start on life and how he is recovering from his own tragedy  now, Hepatitis C.  I have include two great links below for you to read all about him.  And like me, Greg has an apparent need for speed with the C6 Corvette with Stage 3 Kit and the Special Edition Shelby Mustang.  He also loves to ride and has several motorcycles, including his custom Harley Davidson motorcycle and Custom Chopper.  Just look at the Gregg Allman website, you will see a Harley Davidson motorcycle at the top of every post and here is a photo of the band on the Love Ride…gotta love it and you gotta love the man!

Thanks for the comment. That’s great! Melissa is a beautiful name. Let me know if you would like to post an article about your custom motorcycles. I would be happy to put one up.
